Oedaleus infernalis

This is a mid sized grasshopper, brown or grey, with a flattened ridge along the top of the thorax and a pair of pale markings that form an X shape. In flight its hind wings show a dark curved band across a paler base, a pattern that disappears once the wings fold.

It lives in open grassland and along river banks across Japan, the Korean Peninsula and neighboring parts of East Asia, feeding on grasses and sedges, and females lay their eggs in the soil rather than on plants.
