About Entoma

Entoma is a field guide to the insects you actually meet, in a garden, at the roadside, around a campfire. It is made by Pars Kunt, a designer, and reads like a book rather than a database.

How the entries are written

Each entry is drafted from published sources, then checked against them: the surprising fact, the size, the months on the wing, the habitat, the lookalikes and what the species means to people. Where a source says something different from another, the entry says less rather than guessing. Readers report mistakes from every species page in the app, and corrections go into the next monthly update.

Where the plates come from

The plates are prepared from photographs published under Creative Commons licences or used with the photographers' permission: museum specimens and field photographs, retouched onto a plain ground so that every species is shown the same way. The credit and licence for each plate are printed under its entry. Plates from CC BY-SA sources are shared under the same licence.

What is in the guide

The Europe volume covers 478 species in 12 orders and 112 families, laid out in taxonomic order. The North America volume covers 169 species, and East Asia is in preparation. The Europe volume is also published in German. The guide grows every month; the date of the last update is shown at the bottom of each page.
