This grasshopper's wing stubs never grow long enough for flight, yet the species has been expanding steadily into new ground at the northern edge of its European range.

The common maquis grasshopper is small and stocky, with a body that ranges from light brown to grey and only shrunken, scale-like wings that never reach the tip of the abdomen, giving even full-grown adults a nymph-like look.
It lives in dry meadows, forest edges and stony, sun-warmed slopes, feeding on low-growing plants, and adults can be found from early summer well into late autumn. In recent decades it has spread northward into new parts of central Europe.
